Among a variety of activities designed to interpret Gandhian philosophy
and apply it to contemporary problems facing our community and country,
the Foundation commissioned the book Beely Bug Looks for the Truth.
Children, like Gandhi, search for truth as they learn about and
explore the world around them. Through their curious nature, they
begin to discover what is real, both through personal experience
and getting to know what is accepted as real by others. Beyond this,
they develop sincerity in the way they relate to others through
both actions and speech and finally start to put words to concepts
such as truth.
The principles of Mahatma Gandhi can be used as a guide to assist
children through this process. Gandhi believed strongly in the concepts
that are taught in the book, Beely Bug Looks for the Truth. If we
always search for the truth and genuinely love all people, misconceptions
and minsunderstandings will dissipate and respect and non-violence
will follow. Following Beely Bug on his adventures provides an opportunity
for children to think about these concepts and sets the stage for
discussions and activities designed to help children understand
love, sharing, working together, and the importance of honesty.

The Foundation has also prepared a Teacher's Guide
to accompany Beely Bug Looks for the Truth. The activities in this
guide can be used in a number of subject areas within Alberta's
Grade 3 curriculum. Grade 3 was chosen as the most appropriate level
to introduce these concepts as it was felt that these students would
have the maturity necessary to understand and discuss abstract concepts.
Social Studies is an appropriate subject for the lessons taught
in Beely Bug Looks for the Truth, as students are encouraged within
this program to develop positive attitudes needed to be contributing
members of society. The program is designed to prepare students
for active and responsible participation in a changing world.
